What We Want and Need From A Robin Movie

While Warner Bros. has itself focused clearly on Man of Steel and the upcoming Justice League movie, I can't help but think that a Robin movie is inevitable. Even if the ending revelation in Rises was just fan service from Nolan, it would be a incredibly stupid not to cash in on it. But they can't just toss it out to die in the cold, similar to what they did with Green Lantern, that would defeat the purpose entirely. They need to come out strong, if they hope to ever gain traction on Marvel with a character other than Batman. So let's take a look at the things you and I want, and the things needed to succeed, with a movie starring The Boy Wonder.

Keep It Realistic
The Dark Knight trilogy succeed because of a ton of factors, but perhaps mostly because it gave us a different take on the bat. Past films had almost all been much like the early comics, with slapstick fighting and one liners throne generously into the boiling pot. I think in order to be relevant in today's movie world, a Robin movie would have to follow in the path of Nolan's epic. It should be a gritty tale of a cop trying to be more than the common man, and leave the cheesy past behind. DC is clearly a few miles behind Marvel in crafting a movie that feels like a comic book, so I believe it's in there best interest to simply not try. Take the things that work from the comics, but don't try and make it to fantastical.

Lose The Tights
This one goes together with the previous point. Put simply, Robin does not need to run around with no pants on like he used to. That should never have happened. I think something along the lines of what Rocksteady did in Arkham City would be wise. The only thing to watch out for is making him not look like Robin. Super Heroes attire is iconic, so that should be the first order of business in crafting the character. How can they make him resemble his character, without resorting to spandex. Others have already answered this question in comics and fan art, so it's just up to them to pick the best one.

Skip The Origin Story
The easy answer to this is to tie it in to the ending of Rises. But if they for some reason choose to do otherwise, just cut to the chase. This was my major problem with The Amazing Spiderman: it felt like the same movie. Granted, we haven't ever really had a stand alone Robin move, but I think people are generally well enough aware of who he is, that we don't need the whole backstory. But seriously, they already have this solved if they go with the obvious choice, and I think everyone would be fine with it if they did. Personally, I'd love it.
Make It About Robin
But here's the problem with a Robin movie: he's a side-kick. I don't want another batman movie right now, I want something new. The movie should focus on developing Robin as a character, and getting him away from the somewhat bad rep he's gotten. Batman should stay out of it, especially if it ties into The Dark Knight trilogy. They ended it rather decisively, and while I'm sure they could find a logical reason for Batman's return, I don't want them to. Bruce Lee's story has been told, so let's see what they can do with Blake's.

Let Christopher Nolan Direct It
OK, so this is just wishful thinking on my part, but one can dream. Nolan did an incredible job with his Batman films, so why not let him follow them up and continue the story. He's assisting on Man of Steel currently, so clearly he's not apposed to doing more comic book movies. I also think that putting his name on it, whether as director or just producer, would help it at the box office. Green Lantern (yes, I know I keep talking about it) more or less completely bombed, and that would spell doom for future Robin movies. I expect Warner Bros. will be watching how Man of Steel performs before deciding on future DC movies. Batman has really been there only win, and that's thanks of course to Nolan himself. I'm sure he has loads of ideas for what a Robin movie could be like, it's just a question of if they'll see the light of day.

So what's your take on this? Do you think a Robin movie could work? Do you even want one? Let me know in the comments, about what you think Warner Bros should do. How would you make a Robin movie?
